NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The City of North Charleston is facing a negligence suit from a Chesterfield County driver who says a city police officer was going 87 mph, more than double the 40 mph limit, when he struck his car from behind with no blue lights or siren running.
The wreck happened Sept. 7, 2024, on West Montague Avenue, as the driver turned off Saul White Boulevard toward Interstate 26. Officer Edward Jackson was headed to a business alarm call at the time.
An internal review by the North Charleston Police Department found Jackson broke its vehicle operations policy. He got a written reprimand. Remedial driving training was suggested, but he was never ordered to take it, and he remains on the force.
The driver and his wife filed suit on Aug. 24 seeking damages for his injuries and the loss of his car, a Ford Focus that was totaled. The patrol car, a 2021 Dodge Charger, took about $15,000 in damage.
Lawyers for the city answered on Oct. 22, denying nearly every claim. City officials said they would not comment while the case is pending.
