SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Michael Dale Vereen II, a 38-year-old Summerville man, faces two charges tied to the sexual exploitation of a minor after a state probe into abuse images shared online, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced.

Child-crimes investigators from the state Attorney General’s Office took Vereen into custody on Oct. 28. The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, which belongs to the same statewide child internet crimes task force, assisted in the case.

Investigators were led to Vereen by a report to the CyberTipline run by NCMEC, short for National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. They allege he both shared and kept files showing the sexual abuse of children.

One count is second degree and the other third degree, and each can bring up to a decade behind bars. Prosecutors with the state Attorney General’s Office will handle the case in court. Wilson noted that every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
