CHARLESTON, S.C. — A man who was going more than 95 mph on a 35 mph stretch of Dorchester Road in North Charleston when he caused a crash that killed two people will spend 20 years in state prison.

Darrius Laverne Frasier entered guilty pleas Wednesday in Charleston County on a pair of reckless homicide charges, according to the office of Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson. Judge R. Keith Kelly gave him the maximum of 10 years on each count and ordered the terms served back to back.

The fatal collision dates to March 2, 2023, a little before noon. Prosecutors said Frasier was arguing with Sacha Hampton, the friend riding beside him, and drove faster and more recklessly as the argument grew, cutting around traffic before he ran a red light. Frasier then slammed into a car driven by Allison Smith, who had a green arrow and was turning toward the interstate.

Smith was killed at the crash site. Hampton died later at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital, where he had been rushed.

Investigators from the traffic unit of the North Charleston Police Department pulled data from the car showing a speed of 95.2 mph with five seconds to go before impact and still at 83.3 mph when it struck, with braking only in the final second. Cameras at four intersections on his path also recorded the speeding and swerving. In court, Assistant Solicitor Jordan Norvell pressed for the stiffest possible sentence, with the two terms stacked.
