CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston County voters who need a lift to the polls today can ride the bus for free, as CARTA and TriCounty Link waive fares for trips to polling places on Election Day.
Riders simply tell the bus operator when they board that they are on their way to vote. CARTA has run the fare-free program for several years as a way to remove transportation as a barrier to voting, and county elections director Isaac Cramer praised its return this fall.
TriCounty Link is adding service for the Edisto precinct. An extra morning bus leaves Trinity Church at 7:30 a.m. and reaches Citadel Mall around 8:30 a.m., where riders can transfer to CARTA. A return trip departs Citadel Mall at 4 p.m. and gets back to Trinity Church around 6 p.m.
Polls across the county are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone in line by 7 p.m. can still cast a ballot. For absentee voters, the deadline is also 7 p.m. tonight, when Charleston County Elections Headquarters must already have the ballot in hand.
