GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — With the polls set to open Tuesday, the two candidates for the 1st Congressional District spent the final weekend rallying supporters in Goose Creek, S.C., and across the Lowcountry in a race that polling shows as too close to call.
Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt, a Charleston County Council member, drew about 300 people to American Legion Post 166 in Goose Creek on Saturday. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana headlined the event, and U.S. Sen. Tim Scott also turned out. Honeycutt pledged to put the Lowcountry first.
Democrat Nancy Lacore, a retired Navy rear admiral, held her own rally with Dr. Annie Andrews, the party nominee for U.S. Senate. Lacore told the crowd she served 35 years in uniform and wants a member of Congress who makes Washington work for South Carolina. Both women talked about affordability, and volunteers then fanned out to knock on doors.
The coastal seat is held by U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace. Lawmakers redrew it in 2022 to lean more Republican, and Donald Trump carried it by 13 points in 2024, yet Democrats last flipped it in 2018.
Early voting ended Saturday. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
