Charleston has landed at No. 2 on a new national ranking of the country’s top foodie cities for 2026, trailing only New Orleans on a list released this month that combines restaurant search activity with rideshare destination data.
The consumer dining trends report, released Sept. 1, pulled together restaurant search volume, saved-list activity and ride destinations to identify the metros with the strongest current demand for dining out. Charleston’s second-place finish keeps the Lowcountry among the country’s most-searched restaurant scenes for the year and continues a run of national attention that Charleston restaurants have collected across the past several years.
Breakfast and brunch is the most-searched restaurant category in every city on the list, including Charleston. The pattern shows up in the rideshare data as well: nearly one in five rides to restaurants nationally now happens before noon, an early-day skew that has grown alongside a wave of new brunch-focused openings on the peninsula and in West Ashley. Italian cuisine ranks third among Charleston’s most-searched cuisines this year, behind breakfast and seafood.
The South dominates the top 20 overall, taking eight of the spots on the national list. San Diego rounds out the top three behind New Orleans and Charleston, and the ranking also notes a 145% jump in searches for restaurants that accept reservations when compared with the prior year — a shift that has already reshaped booking pages and waitlists at popular Charleston dining rooms.
For Charleston’s tourism operators the placement is more than a bragging line: rideshare data showing where visitors actually go for meals gives the local hospitality industry a clearer picture of which neighborhoods are pulling the strongest food traffic, and which cuisines are drawing the most attention. Charleston’s finish above every other Southern city on the list except New Orleans is likely to be cited by area promoters through the fall visitor season.
The ranking arrives as Charleston restaurants head into a busy fall calendar of festivals, restaurant weeks and touring-chef events, with breakfast and brunch — the category the new data marks as the fastest-growing nationally — continuing to lead local search interest.
