CHARLESTON, S.C. — A goal in the opening minutes was all Samford needed Friday afternoon, Oct. 23, as the visitors beat The Citadel 1-0 in women’s soccer at Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, S.C., in the Bulldogs’ final home match of the year.
Brinley Murphy scored at the 06:12 mark, her fourth goal of the season, with Mamie Carman credited with the assist. Neither side found the net again over the final 84 minutes.

Bulldogs goalkeeper Zoe Santos kept the match close with six saves, three in each half. Peyton Hull made four saves for Samford, all after halftime, for her ninth shutout of the season, the most in the Southern Conference.
With the defeat, The Citadel sits at 3-4-2 against Southern Conference foes and 8-5-4 on the season. Samford, now 9-2-5, stayed unbeaten in conference matches at 6-0-2. A crowd of 173 watched the match, which lasted two hours and 14 minutes. Samford returns home to face UNC Greensboro on Thursday, Oct. 29.
