CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel stayed close with 12th-ranked Tennessee Tech for a half on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles pulled away in the second half for a 28-13 Southern Conference win in Charleston.
The Bulldogs got their only touchdown from the defense when JJ Fludd scooped up a fumble and went 78 yards. Evan Kiely added two field goals, including a career-best 53-yarder in the first quarter. Tennessee Tech still led 14-10 at the break thanks to a 52-yard scoring pass from Jax Leatherwood to Tre’ Holloway.
Fludd, a Charleston native, cashed in after Khaleb Bridges knocked the ball loose, and Bridges forced a second fumble to stop a Tennessee Tech drive late in the half.
A Citadel fumble on the third play of the third quarter set Tennessee Tech up at the 9, and M.J. Flowers scored right away. Flowers later sealed the game with a 27-yard run after Kiely’s late kick.
The Citadel finished with only 190 yards of offense and just nine through the air on 5-of-12 passing. Leatherwood went 20 of 25 for 240 yards, Flowers ran for 124 yards and Holloway caught five passes for 128 yards.
The loss drops The Citadel to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in league play, while Tennessee Tech moves to 7-1 and 4-1. It was only the second meeting between the schools, after the Bulldogs won the 1960 Tangerine Bowl 27-0.
