CHARLESTON, S.C. — Furman beat The Citadel 24-14 on Saturday in Charleston, sending a homecoming crowd of 12,711 home from Sansom Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium with a rivalry loss for the Military College of South Carolina.
The Bulldogs entered at 2-8 overall and 0-6 in Southern Conference play and scored first on a 10-yard keeper by Nick Billoups. Furman, sitting at 3-7 and 2-4 in the league, then piled up 17 points in a row. Ben Croasdale went in from a yard out, hauled in a 3-yard toss from Jake Garcia, and Nathan Chapman knocked through a 20-yard kick.
Billoups sliced the gap to 17-14 with a 2-yard plunge just before the third quarter expired, but Croasdale broke free for 40 yards and a score with 5:22 still on the clock. Billoups ran 23 times for 120 yards and both Citadel touchdowns and threw for another 120 yards on 11 completions in 20 attempts, his first 100-yard rushing day in a Bulldogs uniform.
Yardage favored the home side, 361 to 237. Charleston’s team also sat on the ball for 37 minutes and 13 seconds, compared with 22:47 for the visitors, and moved the chains on 7 of 16 third-down tries. Israel Benjamin gained 65 yards on 13 carries. Gavin Garcia, back after missing the Mercer game, added 38 yards on 10 totes. The clubs have now met 106 times since 1913, with Furman taking the past six and leading the series 66-37-3. The Citadel closed its home slate this fall without a win in five games.
