NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston Southern could not climb out of an early hole Saturday afternoon in North Charleston, S.C., falling 20-10 to UT Martin as the Buccaneers continued their last homestand of the year.
The Skyhawks struck first after a long punt return set them up short, and Tate Surber finished a 4 yd run to cap the brief drive. The Bucs answered with a Matt Rolader 33 yd field goal, but UT Martin then intercepted Jared Echols and ran it back 57 yards to go up 14-3.
Charleston Southern got a break before halftime when its defense blew up a fake punt, and Dwayne Wright plunged in on a 2 yd run to pull within 14-10 at the break.
The third quarter was scoreless. Brandon Sims then hit field goals of 43 and 41 yards in the final quarter to put the game away for UT Martin.
Echols threw for 100 yards and Caden Clay added 76 at quarterback, while Quay Kindell made five catches for 73 yards. Tristan Lennon had 11 tackles to lead the defense.
The Buccaneers close out home play next Saturday against Southeast Missouri State at 2 p.m., with Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day on tap.
