JAMES ISLAND, S.C. — A Charleston cafe brand that built its name downtown has crossed the Wappoo Cut. Caviar & Bananas opened its newest location on Oct. 22 at 1739 Maybank Highway, in the shopping center anchored by Harris Teeter on James Island.
The opening gives the company three cafes and marks its first spot off the peninsula. Its flagship sits in the heart of Downtown Charleston on George Street, and a second store operates on Ashley Avenue, steps from the MUSC campus.
The James Island cafe fills the space once used by Maple Street Biscuit Co. At about 2,600 square feet, it is a bit smaller than the George Street store and close in size to the Ashley Avenue shop. Because it sits at the end of the center, it has room for an outdoor patio.
Customers will find the same menu of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, grab-and-go items and coffee drinks served at the other two stores. Company leaders are weighing more family-style take-home meals there, since late afternoon and early evening traffic may be heavier off the peninsula.
Doors at the new cafe open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., seven days a week. The company, which started near the College of Charleston in 2008, also plans a fourth location at Fairmount Landing on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mount Pleasant.
