Kendrick’s Restaurant Eyes December Opening in Charleston

Published October 25, 2026 at 8:27 am | By Samir Jefferson, Staff Reporter

Quiet residential neighborhood street

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A restaurant name with a long history in the U.S. Virgin Islands is headed for South Market Street in Charleston. Kendrick’s is aiming to open in December at 55 S. Market St., the downtown address that housed Gingerline and, before that, a Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Dustin and Jade Kendrick are opening the family-owned spot, reviving the name his parents, Dave and Jane Kendrick, first used for a restaurant on St. Croix in 1985. The original survived being wiped out by Hurricane Hugo and kept going until 2014.

Dustin Kendrick spent the past eight years running Too Chez, a French-leaning American restaurant in the Christiansted building where his parents once operated. That restaurant has since changed hands, and its new owner plans to reopen it in November under the same name.

The Charleston menu will be compact, roughly 25 dishes drawing on American, Portuguese, Italian and Caribbean cooking with French technique. Plans include a Parmesan-crusted fish piccata made with swordfish or mahi, mussels with chorizo in white wine butter, and slow-cooked Danish baby back ribs in a honey chipotle sauce.

Gingerline shut down in early 2025 after less than three years, and the dining room will keep much of its existing layout, with vintage art and furniture mixed with newer touches.
