NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A 46-year-old North Charleston man is behind bars on a pair of felony child exploitation counts, and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Monday that his office will prosecute the case.
Daniel Paul Van Nostrand is charged with first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts in all. Investigators from the Charleston Police Department, working with the statewide unit that targets crimes against children online, took him into custody last week.
According to investigators, he produced sexual abuse material involving children. No details about the victims have been made public.
If a jury convicts him, each count can carry a sentence of up to 20 years, putting the combined maximum at 40 years behind bars.
This is not his first time in court. He was convicted in 2001 of assault to commit rape, and in 2013 of peeping, voyeurism or aggravated voyeurism, records cited by investigators show.
The case now moves through the state court system in Charleston County.
