North Charleston police announced Tuesday that they have arrested an 18-year-old Ladson man in connection with the deadly shooting at Dobson Place Apartments that killed a 19-year-old at the end of August.
Kevin Bernard Douglas Jr. faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was apprehended with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
The shooting itself occurred Aug. 31. Officers responded to Dobson Place Apartments around 9 p.m. and found two people with gunshot wounds. One of them, Gevione Palmer, 19, died of his injuries. The second victim was hurt and transported to a nearby hospital.
In the hours after the Aug. 31 call, the department locked down multiple buildings inside the apartment complex while investigators worked the scene. The department also asked neighbors to check Ring doorbell footage and to share any recordings that captured activity in the courtyard or parking lot before or after the gunfire. That evidence, combined with weeks of investigative work, formed the basis of the case that culminated in Tuesday’s arrest.
Douglas was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center following the apprehension. Details about a bond hearing and further court dates were not immediately released. The department’s initial call for public help after Aug. 31 centered on security-camera footage from residents at the complex, and Tuesday’s announcement of the murder charge is the first named suspect connected to that request.
