Three passengers were killed and three other people were injured Friday afternoon when a northbound SUV struck a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 in the St. George area of Dorchester County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at approximately 1:09 p.m. near mile marker 83. A 2020 Honda SUV traveling north in the same direction as the tractor-trailer struck the larger vehicle. The SUV was carrying six occupants at the time of the crash.

The driver and two passengers of the Honda were taken to a local hospital with injuries. Their conditions had not been publicly released as of Saturday. Three other passengers riding in the SUV died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was the vehicle’s sole occupant and was not injured, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office had not publicly identified the three people killed. Notifications to next of kin typically precede any release of names in fatal wrecks of this scale.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. St. George sits along the I-95 corridor about 45 miles northwest of downtown Charleston, in one of the busier stretches of the interstate between Charleston and Columbia.
