CHARLESTON COUNTY — Charleston County has landed $1 million in state funding for a new consolidated Emergency Medical Services headquarters on Azalea Drive in North Charleston, allowing planners to move forward on the full slate of equipment and training features that had been designed into the project.
The Azalea Drive facility is planned to consolidate seven current EMS buildings under one roof, pulling training, logistics, vehicle storage, special operations and administrative offices into a single campus. County officials broke ground on the project this past May and have said the site, at 4370 Azalea Drive, is now expected to be completed in a little more than two years.
State Sen. Deon Tedder, who helped secure the money, has framed the appropriation as a way to give every county resident faster and more reliable emergency response regardless of ZIP code. He has publicly pointed to past hurricanes and severe weather events during which existing EMS facilities were knocked out of service or were difficult to operate from, and has argued that a single, hardened central hub will hold up better during long-duration events.
Charleston County EMS Chief Chris Way has told public briefings that the new campus will include a state-of-the-art training center with a patient simulation lab and a driving simulator, and a regional training space that can accommodate more than 300 first responders drawn from across the tri-county area. A department operations center on site is designed to allow the building to go into lockdown mode and stay self-sufficient through weather, natural-disaster and man-made emergencies for extended periods.
The EMS headquarters is planned as a future phase of the county’s broader Azalea Complex, which already opened a six-building, 122,000-square-foot Public Works and Facilities Management campus at 3681 Leeds Avenue in a $65 million second phase. That earlier phase, which sits at the corner of Leeds Avenue and Headquarters Road, was designed to centralize daily county operations and to keep them running during disaster-recovery periods, with generator connections and a garage for the county’s Unified Mobile Command vehicle.
County officials have said the added state funding puts the EMS headquarters project on track to open on the two-year timeline first outlined at the May groundbreaking.
