CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston County Council Chairman Joe Boykin lost his bid for a second term Tuesday, falling by two percentage points to Democrat Charles Glover in one of the night’s biggest local surprises.

Once every precinct was counted, Glover had 49.8% to 47.8% for Boykin, a Johns Island Republican, with Green Party candidate Brian Cooke picking up the remainder. Glover, 64, lives on Yonges Island, once worked as a county detention officer and reported spending no money on his campaign. He told reporters he believed voters were mostly fed up with growth and traffic.

Council will add a second newcomer as well. Democrat Jaxie Ferguson took about 52% to beat Republican Adam Friend for the open District 9 seat, which covers most of James Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah, Seabrook and much of the peninsula below Queen Street. Councilwoman Jenny Costa Honeycutt gave up that seat to run for Congress.

Republican Herb Sass kept his District 1 seat with roughly 53% against Democrat Katie Miller. Larry Kobrovsky and Teddie Pryor had no opponents. All results are unofficial until certified.
