FOLLY BEACH, S.C. — Volunteers are being asked to put on a Halloween costume and grab a trash bag Sunday afternoon, when Toby the Turtle leads a beach cleanup on Folly Beach from 2 to 4 p.m.
Toby is the mascot of the Folly Beach Association of Business Litter Committee, a group that runs regular sweeps of the island, records what it collects and shares that data with officials to push for better litter rules. Sunday’s Spooktacular Costume Litter Sweep has the aquarium in Charleston and Folly Beach city government as partners, and it is part of the ongoing Keep Folly Clean campaign.
Any costume works, and people of all ages are welcome. Organizers recommend signing up ahead of time.
After the cleanup, The LowLife Bar is hosting an after-party from 3 to 7 p.m., with a costume contest starting at 4 p.m. The top three costumes win Toby plaques along with aquarium and bar prizes. Volunteers also get a wristband that unlocks treats and deals at participating island businesses, and those offers are only for people who took part in the sweep.
