CHARLESTON, S.C. — The College of Charleston has kicked off the biggest fundraising push in its history, a $300 million drive called The Promise of Charleston that leaders unveiled Thursday night in Charleston.

The campaign made its public debut at a formal gala inside TD Arena on Nov. 5. The quiet phase that came first had brought in $167.5 million by the July 1, 2023, mark, according to the college.

Beyond the dollar target, the college wants to double how many alumni give and triple the share of graduates who stay engaged with the school. Money raised is meant to widen hands-on learning and workforce training that leaders tie to growth in the regional economy.

College President Andrew T. Hsu has cast the school as being in the middle of a renaissance and described the campaign as a pledge to keep that momentum and open more doors for students.

Organizers framed the effort around deeper Lowcountry ties and a wider national reputation, with more scholarship money and new ways of teaching and learning. The college is also asking people with no direct tie to the campus to take part.

The College of Charleston Foundation, led by the school chief advancement officer, is overseeing the drive.
