Norfolk Southern has begun running a daily, direct intermodal rail service linking the Port of Charleston to Huntsville, Alabama, giving South Carolina’s port system a faster route into markets across north Alabama and Middle Tennessee.
The new lane, announced in a Sept. 11 release, is aimed at expanding the port’s rail reach into Southeast markets that have not always had a straightforward connection from Charleston’s terminals. Roughly a quarter of the cargo volume moving through South Carolina Ports already travels by rail rather than truck, and the Huntsville service gives shippers another option beyond the port’s existing hubs in Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte and Louisville.
The move builds on a broader rail expansion South Carolina Ports completed last year at Inland Port Greer, where a $55 million investment added roughly 9,000 feet of track and lifted the facility’s cargo capacity by about 50%. Greer’s location along the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte has made it a key relay point for goods moving between Charleston’s marine terminals and inland customers, and Norfolk Southern already runs daily overnight service there.
Charleston’s rail infrastructure benefits from having both Norfolk Southern and CSX operating large intermodal yards in the city, each capable of handling double-stack trains, along with a dray program that shuttles containers between the marine terminals and those yards. Port officials have pointed to that dual-carrier setup as a competitive advantage over single-railroad ports when courting shippers who want flexible inland routing.
For businesses in north Alabama that have historically routed goods through Gulf Coast ports, the new Huntsville service offers a more direct path to the Atlantic, potentially reshuffling some regional freight patterns as companies weigh transit times and rail access against established trucking routes.
