The Calhoun Street decision arrives as Charleston’s housing boards work through a backlog of peninsula and West Ashley projects competing for scarce buildable land. Elsewhere in the city, the Charleston Housing Authority has separately secured approval for 77 new affordable homes on Huger Street, a project city officials have framed as part of a broader push to add housing stock across income levels rather than concentrate new construction in any single price tier.
Neither approval resolves the tension that has defined Charleston’s development debates for years: longtime residents and preservation-minded board members frequently clash with developers over building height, density and how new projects fit against the peninsula’s historic street grid.
