Burke High School Boosts Programs to Attract Students

Charleston County School District leaders and alumni of Burke High School are working to enhance the historic downtown Charleston institution’s legacy. This effort comes as the school’s new principal, Jacob Perlmutter, a Burke graduate from 1995, returns to lead the school he attended three decades ago. The initiative, discussed at a press conference on Thursday, August 27, 2026, focuses on increasing enrollment and strengthening academic offerings.

Burke High School, established in 1910, has historically been a cornerstone of the Black community in Charleston. Principal Perlmutter highlighted existing and new programs designed to retain current students and attract more families. These include the Leonard McLeod Cultural Arts Collaborative, which now offers theater, piano, and chorus classes, expanding the school’s arts curriculum. Additionally, the school has broadened its career and technical education options and formed partnerships, such as one with the American College of the Building Arts.

During a luncheon with alumni, questions arose regarding whether the school’s plans would prepare students for more than skilled labor positions. However, alumni leaders expressed their support for efforts to boost enrollment and academic standards. Raleigh Murphy, chairman of Burke ICS Ballers and Friends, conveyed the alumni’s commitment to diligently assist in raising enrollment and restoring academic excellence. Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins emphasized that the district’s primary goal is to ensure Burke students are well-prepared for their post-graduation endeavors, including achieving high academic levels. Final enrollment figures for Burke High School have not yet been publicly released, pending a meeting of district officials.
