Charleston Mayor William Cogswell and city council members will conduct five State of the City events across various areas of Charleston, a departure from previous addresses held solely in City Council chambers. These community gatherings aim to engage residents directly on city achievements and future goals.
The city released information on August 18 detailing the new format, which will bring discussions on infrastructure projects, public safety, and quality-of-life improvements to different neighborhoods. Residents in West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, Cainhoy, and the peninsula will have the opportunity to hear from local leaders and provide feedback.
Mayor Cogswell stated that the initiative is about showing up, listening, and ensuring the city’s work reflects what matters to its residents. He emphasized a desire to hear directly from the community about what is effective and what requires attention in every part of the city.
Residents are encouraged to submit questions online in advance of the events. The schedule for these community discussions is as follows:
- September 15 at 5:30 p.m. at West Ashley High School
- October 6 at 5:30 p.m. at St. John’s High School
- October 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Daniel Island Recreation Center
- November 5 at 6:30 p.m. at James Island Elementary School
- November 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Burke High School
Mayor Cogswell delivered his only other State of the City address on April 8, 2025. During that address, he highlighted the city’s need to address areas where growth has strained roads and infrastructure. He expressed a commitment to building a Charleston that is connected, resilient, and thriving, honoring its past while embracing its future.
