NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A long-empty former Kmart property on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, S.C., is set to become the first permanent home of Kids On Point, a nonprofit that runs after-school and summer programs for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

The campus will rise at 3725 Rivers Ave., close to where Rivers and McMillan avenues meet. A local couple donated the land and put money toward construction, the group said. The center is expected to open in 2029, and the nonprofit is asking the public to share ideas for how the space should be used.

Founded in 2009, Kids On Point now reaches more than 500 students a year through work with more than 60 community partners. It has run its programs at the College of Charleston for 16 years, and that site will stay open after the new campus is built.

Executive Director Lauren Herterich said the North Charleston center will let the program clear its wait lists and double the number of families it serves, and possibly triple that over time. Leaders said more families have moved off the peninsula in recent years, and the new site keeps those children in the program.

The property sits on a major bus line near the planned Shipwatch Square Transit and Workforce Center, which leaders said will ease transportation problems for students. Mayor Reggie Burgess called the project another sign of investment along the Rivers Avenue corridor.
