NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Travelers flying out of Charleston International Airport in North Charleston will be able to reach the West Coast without a layover starting March 28, 2027, when United Airlines launches nonstop service to San Francisco.
The airline and the airport announced the route Thursday. Planes will depart four days a week, on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and the service is seasonal, running from March through November.
Today the only nonstop link from Charleston to California is a seasonal Breeze Airways route to Los Angeles. The new flights tie the Lowcountry to the United hub at San Francisco International Airport, where passengers can catch onward flights to Pacific Rim and Asian cities and points along the West Coast.
United already links Charleston with five of its hubs: Denver, Houston, Newark, Chicago and Washington Dulles. The carrier says its seat capacity at the airport this month is up 50 percent from a year ago, largely because it has swapped smaller regional jets for larger mainline planes.
Airport president and chief executive Elliott Summey said demand for easy access to major markets keeps climbing as the region grows. Charleston now offers more than 50 nonstop routes, and the airport, which sits on Joint Base Charleston, handled a record of roughly 6.2 million passengers in 2024.
