CHARLESTON, S.C. — A candidate for State House District 110 spent the first day of early voting covering his Charleston-area district the hard way, on foot and by water, in a trip of more than 20 miles.
KJ Atwood, a Mount Pleasant small business owner, started at 7 a.m. Monday on a route he billed as a floating-vote tour. He planned to walk to Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, ride the Charleston Water Taxi to downtown, cross the peninsula on foot and then take a boat to the Wappoo Cut area before walking to Fort Johnson on James Island for a 4 p.m. town hall.
Atwood said the oddly shaped district, which stretches across Mount Pleasant, downtown, West Ashley and James Island, cannot be crossed without a boat, and he argued lines are often drawn to protect incumbents. His campaign says it has knocked on more than 10,000 doors and is centered on affordability, infrastructure, traffic and flooding.
Early voting in South Carolina runs through Saturday, Oct. 31, with centers open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sunday, Oct. 25. Voters must bring a valid photo ID. Charleston County election director Isaac Cramer has urged voters to check their sample ballot at scVOTES.gov before heading out.
The Nov. 3 general election ballot also includes races for governor, attorney general, U.S. Senate and Congress.
