NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Tyler Kopff scored in sudden-death overtime Saturday night to give the South Carolina Stingrays a 4-3 win over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in their home opener at the North Charleston Coliseum, where 6,828 fans turned out.
Alex Dostie, playing in his first games for the club, scored twice. Goaltender Ben Kraws, also making his Stingrays debut, turned aside 25 of the 28 Greenville shots he faced.
Tyler Weiss opened the scoring on a first-period power play, and Dostie made it 2-0 with 4:49 left in the period before Blake Bennett put Greenville on the board. Dostie restored the two-goal cushion early in the second, but Brendan Gorman answered with 9:15 to go in the frame.
Neil Shea forced the extra period with a goal inside the last four minutes of regulation. South Carolina kept the puck for most of overtime until Kopff finished from in front of the net.
The win leaves the Stingrays at 2-0-0. They visit the Savannah Ghost Pirates at Enmarket Arena on Friday at 7 p.m., and the two teams meet again Oct. 30 back at the Coliseum, with a 7:05 p.m. start.
