CHARLESTON, S.C. — In Charleston, roughly 40 College of Charleston political science students are training to staff precincts as certified workers for the Nov. 3 general election.
Juniors and seniors in POLI 339, tagged Democracy in Action, already ran a campus voter signup push and are now moving through poll-manager drills with the county elections board.
Professor Jordan Ragusa called the arrangement a win for students who pick up civic skills and for the county, which needs nonpartisan help on Election Day.
Haley Oryell, the board’s community engagement manager, said students finished voter-ambassador training and are building on that work with Election Day procedures.
The campus sits in Harleston Village, a walkable stretch of the peninsula where college life mixes with older Charleston neighborhoods, putting the class next door to the voters it hopes to serve.
Statewide election officials are separately urging South Carolinians to map out early-voting plans ahead of the Nov. 3 ballot, underscoring the crush of work county boards face through early voting and Election Day.
