Mount Pleasant, S.C. — Mount Pleasant police forced open an apartment door on Anna Knapp Boulevard early Oct. 13 after hearing a woman scream for help, then arrested her husband on a domestic violence charge, the Mount Pleasant Police Department said.
Officers responded about 2:40 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a domestic incident. Geoffrey Gugel was charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature after police said they found him on top of the victim and assaulting her when they entered.
The victim told officers Gugel had been intoxicated, pushed her outside, then armed himself with a baseball bat, struck her in the side of the head, tried to smash her phone, and attempted to strangle her. Officers documented injuries they said matched the assault she described, and a metal baseball bat was found in the room.
Body camera video released by town police showed officers arriving, kicking in the door, and subduing Gugel.
Gugel remained in custody following the arrest on the high and aggravated nature charge.
