Charleston, S.C.: Driver dies after I-26 crash near Weber

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A driver died after an eastbound Interstate 26 crash near mile marker 206 in North Charleston on Saturday morning, and the roadway closed for several hours while troopers investigated.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the collision happened at 7:53 a.m. near the Weber Boulevard interchange. A 2016 Kia Sorento ran off the right side of the road and struck the rear of a tow truck that was stopped on the shoulder.

The Kia driver and a passenger were taken to a hospital. The driver later died from injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger condition was not disclosed. The tow truck driver, the sole occupant of that vehicle, was not injured.

North Charleston police and the Highway Patrol were on scene as all eastbound lanes were blocked between mile markers 205 and 206. Drivers were diverted at Weber Boulevard while the investigation continued.

The Charleston County Coroner Office had not released the identity of the deceased driver. The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Interstate 26 eastbound later reopened around 11 a.m. after several hours of closures tied to the fatal collision near the Weber interchange.
