Charleston's Super-Sod acquired, expands with new purchase

Charleston-based turfgrass company Super-Sod, a division of Patten Seed Holdings, has been acquired by Kainos Capital from Heartwood Partners. This acquisition follows Super-Sod’s own purchase of Edge Right, a manufacturer and marketer of steel landscape edging and outdoor products.

Patten Seed Holdings, which moved its headquarters to Charleston’s WestEdge development in 2023, was sold to Dallas-based Kainos Capital in June. Heartwood Partners had owned Patten Seed Holdings for six years, during which time it expanded the company’s reach through several buyouts in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. Kainos Capital plans to continue growing the business through organic initiatives and additional acquisitions.

Super-Sod’s acquisition of Edge Right includes products such as planters, tree rings, fire pits, and vegetable markers. Daniel Mullaly, president of Berry, Alabama-based Edge Right, stated that Super-Sod is the right partner for the business, offering opportunities to expand the brand, introduce new products, and serve customers in the lawn, garden, and outdoor living markets. Financial terms of this transaction were not disclosed.

Patten Seed, which began as a general store in southern Georgia nearly 135 years ago, is now one of the largest turfgrass producers in the Southeast. Its operations include a network of farms and Super-Sod retail stores, with a location on Iron Rod Court in North Charleston and others across the state. One of its largest turf-growing operations is in Orangeburg. Jim Roquemore, the late great-grandson of the founder, managed the fifth-generation family business from 1987 until its sale to Heartwood in 2020.

In other local business news, Greenville-based United Community Bank finalized its acquisition of Georgia’s Peach State Bank & Trust on August 1. The $100.9 million deal was financed with a combination of cash and stock. Peach State Bank & Trust, founded in 2005, operates two branches in Gainesville, Georgia, and will adopt the United Community name by March 31. United Community Bank now operates approximately 65 branches in Georgia, primarily in the northern part of the state. The bank moved its corporate headquarters to Greenville in 2021 after years of being based in Blairsville, Georgia.

Additionally, Kiawah Island Golf Resort has partnered with Charlotte-based Coca-Cola Consolidated as its new beverage provider. Guests at the resort can now order Coca-Cola fountain beverages at dining locations, and The Nest general store will carry the full portfolio of bottled Coca-Cola beverages. This partnership was initiated due to strong guest demand for Coca-Cola products.
