MUSC Health in Charleston recently performed South Carolina’s first pediatric single-port robotic surgery on August 24, 2026, offering new hope to a young patient with a rare bladder condition. The procedure was led by Chad Crigger, M.D., MPH, a reconstructive pediatric urologist, marking a significant advancement in local pediatric surgical options.
The patient, Evan, was born with bladder exstrophy, a condition affecting approximately 1 in 30,000 to 50,000 individuals, where the bladder is located outside the body. This condition significantly impacted his ability to attend school and live a typical childhood, with limited access to specialized treatment in his small South Carolina hometown. His grandmother, Liz Brandon, noted the long search for appropriate care, including previous unsuccessful surgeries and a nearly nine-month wait for a denied surgery in another city.
Single-port robotic surgery is a less invasive alternative to traditional multi-port robotic surgeries. It utilizes only one small incision to access the surgical site, which is designed to reduce scarring, enhance precision, and shorten recovery times. Despite initial apprehension about robotic surgery, Evan’s grandmother expressed comfort with Dr. Crigger and his team, who provided thorough explanations and consistent updates during the twelve-hour bladder reconstruction.
The surgery successfully reconstructed and slightly enlarged Evan’s bladder, improving its capacity and kidney functions. Following the procedure, Evan has been attending weekly check-ups and minor procedures to ensure a smooth healing process. His grandmother shared that he is looking forward to a more normal routine as he prepares to start high school in the fall, anticipating a future less dominated by medical challenges.
