Mount Pleasant, South Carolina – The College of Charleston Cougars delivered a resounding performance against the William & Mary Tribe, winning the opening game of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament 12-0 on May 21, 2025. The match took place at the Patriots Point Sports Complex, showcasing the Cougars’ dominance as they clinched the victory in just seven innings.

Pitcher Jake Brink led the charge for College of Charleston, throwing a complete game with an impressive 91 pitches. He allowed only five hits throughout the contest, striking out five batters and walking just one. Remarkably, Brink only permitted one runner to reach third base, demonstrating control and efficiency on the mound.

The Cougars’ offense was similarly potent, accumulating a total of 12 hits, which included a double, two triples, and four home runs. Avery Neaves stood out offensively, hitting a home run and driving in three runs. Meanwhile, both Dylan Johnson and Neaves contributed two-run homers to the score. Additional home runs came from Ethan Plyler and Landon Penfield, who each recorded solo shots.

College of Charleston displayed an aggressive scoring strategy, amassing multiple runs in four different innings, which ultimately sealed their commanding lead. Infielder Tyler Sorrentino also made a significant impact, achieving a 3-for-3 showing at the plate and adding a run batted in.

This comprehensive win improved College of Charleston’s record to 35-20 and positioned them favorably for the tournament’s winner’s bracket. In the next phase of the tournament, the Cougars will vie against either the top-seeded Northeastern or the No. 2 seed UNCW.

Coach Chad Holbrook commended Brink’s exceptional performance on the mound and acknowledged the role of defensive errors by William & Mary in facilitating the Cougars’ scoring. Due to Brink’s low pitch count, there is a possibility that he may appear again during the tournament, contributing further to the team’s efforts.

Despite the overwhelming victory, Holbrook raised concerns regarding the limited number of teams participating in the CAA Tournament. Currently, only half of the league’s 12 teams are competing, a stark contrast to the Southern Conference, which features all eight teams in its tournament format. Holbrook suggested that an expanded tournament could better reflect the high-quality baseball being played across the league.

As the Cougars advance in the CAA Tournament, they will aim to build on their strong start, demonstrating both pitching prowess and offensive firepower as they seek a championship title.
