Charleston, SC – The College of Charleston baseball team secured a decisive victory against North Carolina A&T, winning 12-2 in an eight-inning game, effectively marking their first sweep of the season. This triumph improves CofC’s overall record to 31-19 and 13-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), while North Carolina A&T’s record decreases to 15-34 overall and 9-15 in league play.

The Cougars kicked off the matchup with a strong start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. By the fourth inning, Charleston maintained a 3-1 lead after the Aggies managed to score one run. Freshman Alex LaCoste played a pivotal role in the Cougars’ offense, hitting his first career home run in the fourth inning and following it up with a second homer in the sixth. His contributions were essential to expanding Charleston’s advantage.

LaCoste’s first home run came from a 3-1 pitch, clearing the left field wall and elevating the score to 5-2 after his second homer. The scoring momentum continued as senior Dariyan Pendergrass connected with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, extending the lead to 7-2. The Cougars finished the game strongly, scoring four runs in the eighth inning, which activated the run rule and concluded the game early. A two-run blast by Avery Neaves brought Charleston’s total to twelve runs, marking their fourth double-digit score in the last five outings.

On the pitching side, sophomore Hayden Thomas opened the game, allowing two runs over four innings. Senior Aidan Hunter took over and pitched four scoreless innings, improving his record to 6-3 for the season with a remarkable efficiency of just 47 pitches to secure the win.

Pendergrass showcased his capabilities by scoring three runs for the second consecutive game while also stealing two bases, elevating his season total to 34 stolen bases. His performance highlights the Cougars’ overall aggressive base running, aggregating 94 stolen bases this season, the highest tally since 2019. Under the leadership of Head Coach Chad Holbrook, the team has shown resilience, with a record of 12-1 when scoring 10 or more runs in a game this season.

In terms of historical performance, Charleston has now achieved a 14-5 record against North Carolina A&T all-time. Furthermore, they hold a 5-1 record as the visiting team against the Aggies. LaCoste’s achievement of hitting multiple home runs in a single game makes him the first true freshman from CofC to accomplish this feat since 2015. Meanwhile, senior Tyler Sorrentino extended his hitting streak to ten games, the longest for a Cougar this season.

The Cougars’ current six-game winning streak is bolstered by their pitching staff, which boasts an impressive 2.77 earned run average (ERA). The four home runs hit during this game represent a season-high for the Cougars and emphasize their offensive capabilities.

Looking ahead, College of Charleston’s next game is scheduled for Sunday at War Memorial Stadium, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
