Winter Storm Brings Early Dismissals and Closures Across the Lowcountry
Charleston’s cozy streets are buzzing with the news as a looming winter storm sends chilly shivers down the spine of many residents. Brace yourselves, folks, because school and government operations are getting a weather-induced shakeup this Tuesday and Wednesday. With predictions of 3 to 6 inches of snow and some areas possibly even more, it looks like we might just need to dust off those snow shovels!
School District Responses to the Weather
Starting the day, the Charleston County School District is looking out for its students’ safety by opting for an early dismissal at 2 p.m. Say goodbye to after-school programs, as they are canceled for today! Tomorrow, a complete shift to eLearning is on the agenda with all school buildings closed. Make sure the kids are all set up for some at-home learning!
Meanwhile, the Berkeley County Schools are following suit with a half-day schedule on Tuesday, sending kids home early, and asking them to complete their assignments from home on Wednesday. Dorchester County School District Two is running an early release on Tuesday too, with expectations for an eLearning day on Wednesday. Dorchester County School District Four isn’t wasting any time, going straight to eLearning for both Tuesday and Wednesday.
If you’re in the Beaufort County Schools area, expect an early dismissal today, transitioning to eLearning starting Wednesday. Over in Colleton County, schools will also wrap things up early on Tuesday and take a breather with closures on Wednesday. The Georgetown County School District is doing the same with a half-day, but they won’t be engaging in eLearning tomorrow. Bust out the hot cocoa, kids!
Over in Williamsburg County, it’s business as usual for now, with regular hours on Tuesday, but brace for a no-school situation on Wednesday, officially dubbed an Inclement Weather Day. Learn4Life High School is kicking things into high gear with eLearning scheduled for both days. Palmetto Christian Academy will have a half-day on Tuesday followed by remote learning on Wednesday.
Colleges and Universities Follow the Trend
Higher education institutions are also taking precautions. Charleston Southern University will transition to online learning after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, sticking to that plan through Wednesday with hopes to resume normal operations on Thursday. The College of Charleston will be holding in-person classes until 2 p.m. Tuesday before switching over to eLearning for the rest of the day and continuing through Wednesday.
City and Community Services Impacted
Not just schools, but the City of Charleston has decided to close its offices at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, remaining shut down on Wednesday. Residents who may need assistance from Roper St. Francis Healthcare can rest assured that emergency departments will remain open, although other operations will be limited. If you’re planning a trip to local attractions like the South Carolina Aquarium or the Charleston Museum, think again! Both will close on Tuesday and stay shut for Wednesday as well.
Public Transportation and Food Resources
Transportation might get a little tangled as well. CARTA and TriCounty Link are planning to suspend specific operations on both days, with updates coming based on road conditions. For those dependent on food assistance, the Lowcountry Food Bank will close all its locations on Wednesday, but help can still be sought via Trident United Way.
The Lowcountry is gearing up for some snow and chilly weather! Let’s all stay safe, keep warm, and support each other as we navigate through these snowy days ahead!
