Highlights include major operas, the Front Row Series with performances by artists like Mavis Staples and Patti Smith, and indoor acts at local theaters. With a transformative artistic experience planned, the festival promises to further enrich Charleston’s cultural landscape.

Charleston is set to host the highly anticipated Spoleto Festival USA from May 23 to June 8, 2025. The festival will span 17 days and feature over 120 performances, making it a prominent event on the spring cultural calendar. Attendees can expect a diverse array of multimedia offerings, operas, and concerts.

Among the key highlights of the festival are two major opera presentations: “The Turn of the Screw” by Benjamin Britten and “Thaïs” by Jules Massenet. This year’s festival lineup will also include a range of well-known artists performing in the Front Row Series at the College of Charleston’s outdoor Cistern Yard.

The Front Row Series is set to feature an impressive roster of performers, including music veterans Mavis Staples, Patti Smith, Band of Horses, Lucinda Williams, and Valerie June, accompanied by Jake Xerxes Fussell. The series will also spotlight Corinne Bailey Rae, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Yo La Tengo, and MJ Lenderman performing alongside Patterson Hood. These intimate outdoor performances will commence at 9 p.m., with ticket prices starting at $41, available through spoletousa.org/events. Discounts will be offered for students, military personnel, and teachers who present valid identification.

In addition to the outdoor concerts, three artists will perform indoors at the Charleston Music Hall and Dock Street Theatre: Aja Monet, Red Baraat, and Arooj Aftab. Attendees can look forward to several new elements in the festival this year, including the introduction of evening performances in addition to the traditional daytime concerts.

Another notable change involves the Spoleto Festival’s board, which has welcomed seven new members. With these changes, Paul Wiancko has been appointed as the new Director of Chamber Music and will be collaborating with The Kronos Quartet as part of the Bank of America Chamber Music Series.

The festival will also feature the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, showcasing classical pieces such as Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Additionally, fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi will present his cabaret “I Know Everyone” at the Charleston Music Hall, which will include jazz music and commentary.

A significant theatrical production, “White Box,” will make its U.S. premiere at the festival, telling the story of a gas balloon that disappeared in 1897 over the North Pole. In preparation for outdoor performances, the festival will provide folding chairs for attendees’ comfort across the grounds.

Mena Mark Hanna, the General Director and CEO of the festival, has expressed the transformative experience of attending Spoleto, emphasizing it as a journey through artistic imagination. Pre-sale access for festival donations is scheduled to begin on February 12, 2025, with general ticket sales opening at 10 a.m. on February 21, 2025.

Festivals like Spoleto play a vital role in establishing Charleston as a key cultural destination, attracting artists and audiences alike. The festival has long been a cornerstone of Charleston’s artistic community, further enriching the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.
