Advanced 3D imaging device designed for space applications.

News Summary

Charleston-based startup Pensievision is set to launch its advanced 3D imaging technology to the International Space Station in August, marking a historic event. This mission aims to study microbial extremophiles in the unique conditions of space. The initiative also supports women’s health research in Malawi, showcasing the dual focus of Pensievision on space exploration and significant health challenges. Led by technology experts, the project emphasizes affordable, compact imaging solutions, including innovative liquid lenses specifically designed for space applications.

Charleston – Charleston-based startup Pensievision is preparing to launch its advanced 3D imaging technology to the International Space Station (ISS) in August. This mission will also serve as an experimental study focusing on microbial extremophiles and their survival in the unique conditions of space. This marks a significant step for the company, which has been utilizing its imaging technology in cervical cancer treatment for the last six years.

Pensievision aims to introduce a more compact and affordable imaging solution compared to traditional systems like CT scans. The upcoming launch will make history as it will be the first time liquid lenses will be utilized in space applications, specifically within the 3D imaging device. These liquid lenses will be tunable, allowing them to adjust their focus when electric voltage is applied.

Joe Carson, the chief technology officer of the company, leads the project and brings a wealth of knowledge through his background in astronomy and astrophysics. Other key leadership members include Joe Carson’s brother, Benjamin Carson, who oversees legal and regulatory affairs, and his brother-in-law Tal Almog, who acts as the president. The company’s chief medical officer, Dr. Dennis Carson, also contributes his expertise to the initiative, particularly in the field of cancer research.

Collaboration with College of Charleston

Pensievision is collaborating with the College of Charleston to prepare the payload for the ISS launch. This partnership extends the company’s local connections, as many of its staff are former students of Joe Carson from the College of Charleston. Following assembly, the payload will be sent to the Space and Planetary Exploration Laboratory in Chile.

Future Missions and Research Initiatives

The August mission is intended as a precursor to a more comprehensive follow-up mission in the future. In addition to its space endeavors, Pensievision is conducting a women’s health study using its 3D imaging technology in Malawi, Africa, alongside research into AIDS-related skin cancers. These initiatives exemplify Pensievision’s commitment to employing its technology for significant health challenges both on Earth and beyond.

Potential Applications in Space

Joe Carson has highlighted several exciting possibilities for the imaging technology in space. These include monitoring CubeSat payloads, facilitating astronaut telemedicine, and assisting with spacecraft surface inspections. The prospect of transforming laboratory ideas into practical applications that improve lives is a source of fulfillment for the team at Pensievision.

Support and Operations

Pensievision has benefited from substantial support from the South Carolina Research Authority, aiding its development within the state. While Pensievision’s research and development activities are anchored in Charleston, the company’s headquarters is located in San Diego. This geographical distribution illustrates Pensievision’s strategic approach to leveraging local talent and support while expanding its reach in innovative technology applications.

The significant advancement of sending imaging technology to the ISS reflects Pensievision’s drive to push the boundaries of science and innovation while maintaining a focus on health solutions. As the August mission approaches, the team is poised to mark a milestone that may open doors for future technological growth in both space exploration and medical applications.
