A major aspect of this recruitment effort involves a focus on hiring multi-lingual officers, particularly those fluent in Spanish, to better serve the city’s Hispanic community, which exceeds 15,000 residents, accounting for nearly 13% of the population.

The Chief underscored that effective communication is vital for enhancing relationships with the Hispanic community, particularly in light of recent changes in immigration policies. Officers are encouraged to build trust and dispel misconceptions about law enforcement and immigration concerns. In addition to recruitment, the North Charleston Police Department is prioritizing comprehensive training for its new officers. These recruits will undergo approximately 12 weeks of training, which includes riding along with seasoned officers to gain hands-on experience before they take on independent responsibilities.
