North Charleston – The North Charleston Arts Fest took place from April 30 to May 4, featuring a variety of performances and exhibitions by local and regional artists. The event included a diverse range of artistic expressions such as puppet shows, improvisational performances, live painting sessions, and gospel music showcases, all designed to celebrate the creativity within the community.

Activities were held across multiple venues throughout North Charleston, including libraries, community centers, businesses, parks, and the North Charleston Coliseum. This broad outreach aimed to engage residents and visitors alike, ensuring that the arts were accessible to all. Selection of participants for the festival was based on an open application process, allowing for a wide variety of talents to be showcased.

A highlight of this year’s festival was the Tri-County Youth Art Exhibition and High School Sculpture Competition, which invited students from Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties to display their works. The 2023 youth exhibition received an impressive 1,034 entries, while the sculpture competition featured 64 sculptures submitted by ten local high schools. Free and open to the public, the youth art exhibit drew thousands of attendees, offering young artists a platform to present their creations and engage with the local arts community.

Art educators like Paige Duvall emphasized the festival’s significance in fostering student engagement with the arts. The event provides a critical opportunity for students to validate their creative efforts and gain exposure beyond the confines of the classroom, often marking their first experience displaying artwork in a public venue.

In preparation for the festival, educators guide students through the process of making their work “exhibition-ready” while also addressing the importance of public feedback. This experience not only boosts confidence but also aids in the development of students’ artistic identities. Participation in events like the North Charleston Arts Fest can enhance students’ portfolios, helping them as they apply for colleges and further artistic endeavors.

The North Charleston Cultural Arts Department managed the festival with a budget of $1.4 million — including $5,000 allocated for advertising purposes. This substantial budget underscores the city’s commitment to promoting the arts and supporting local talent.

In connection with the festival, Morgan Serreno East is scheduled to present her art exhibition “Nocturne” on May 16 and 17. This exhibition will predominantly feature black-and-white oil paintings that delve into the theme of water and its abstract qualities. East, who recently transitioned from a 16-year corporate career to becoming a full-time artist, aims to evoke emotional responses and promote healing through her artwork.

The limited color palette utilized in East’s “Nocturne” exhibition, which consists solely of black, white, and grays, reflects her passion for photography. It also seeks to highlight artistic composition. Conceptually, the exhibition is intertwined with music, as some paintings take inspiration from ambient music tracks; this connection likens the act of painting to the experience of an evening swim.

The North Charleston Arts Fest serves as an essential event for fostering local artistic talent and building community connections. By showcasing diverse performances and exhibitions, the festival not only enriches the cultural landscape of North Charleston but also cultivates a sense of belonging and pride among its residents.
