Elegant setting for the Latin Lawyer Awards ceremony

News Summary

The 19th annual Latin Lawyer Awards, set for May 8, 2025, in São Paulo, will prioritize pro bono initiatives in Latin America. Beneficiaries include Brazil’s Instituto Pro Bono and Fundación Pro Bono Guatemala, among others. The event will donate 30% of proceeds to support important legal initiatives and celebrate excellence in the legal profession, highlighting leadership in pro bono contributions.

Latin Lawyer’s Annual Awards: Pro Bono Commitment Takes Center Stage

On 15 April 2025, it was officially announced that the proceeds from the highly anticipated 19th annual awards ceremony organized by Latin Lawyer will be dedicated to crucial pro bono initiatives across Latin America. Scheduled for 8 May 2025 at the sophisticated Rosewood in São Paulo, this year’s ceremony promises not just glamor but a significant commitment to social responsibility.

Support for Pro Bono Organizations

The awards will benefit three distinct pro bono clearinghouses: Brazil’s Instituto Pro Bono, Fundación Pro Bono Guatemala, and a collaborative initiative led by Red Pro Bono de Las Américas. For the very first time, this year’s funds will also support the Strengthening Civic Space in Latin America initiative, coordinated by the Fundación Pro Bono Chile and The Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice.

This landmark initiative aims to bolster civil society organizations (CSOs) by ensuring they meet essential legal requirements, thereby resembling a safeguard against the potential closure of civic spaces. Funds raised during the ceremony will facilitate a variety of activities, including hosting webinars, developing digital content, and publishing valuable legal guides for practitioners and organizations alike.

Generosity in Numbers

Latin Lawyer is set to donate a commendable 30% of the event’s revenue to the designated beneficiaries, with the total distributed evenly among the three organizations. In the previous year, each of the clearinghouses received a generous donation of US$14,756. Last year’s honorees included Instituto Pro Bono, Fundación Pro Bono Colombia, and Appleseed Mexico.

A Celebration of Excellence

During the awards ceremony, attendees can expect to witness the announcement of prestigious awards, including both the Individual Awards and the Deal of the Year Awards. The event aims to highlight leadership and excellence across various arenas such as law firm management, diversity, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, along with a special focus on pro bono contributions.

Recognizing Pro Bono Leaders

Earlier this year, on 29 January 2025, it was revealed that Colombian law firm Gómez-Pinzón has been honored with the title of Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year. This accolade recognizes the firm’s unwavering dedication to pro bono efforts, with a notable full-time pro bono coordinator, La Mía María Moya Ortiz, at the helm of these initiatives. Under the leadership of partner Paula Samper-Salazar, Gómez-Pinzón has cultivated a robust culture of pro bono work, which incorporates alignment of performance and salaries with pro bono contributions.

In 2023 alone, Gómez-Pinzón recorded an impressive total of 6,210 pro bono hours, with an average of 35.5 hours per attorney, and took on 321 pro bono cases, well exceeding local clearinghouse targets by 121 cases. The firm’s exemplary commitment has consistently placed it among the Leading Lights in the legal community.

Recognizing Future Leaders

Latin Lawyer will formally present the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year Award to Gómez-Pinzón during the ceremony in São Paulo. Past Individual Award winners have included distinguished names such as managing partner Paulo Rocha and Todd Crider of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, showcasing the range of excellence in the legal profession.

A Bright Future for Pro Bono Initiatives

With the nomination period for the Individual Awards closing in December 2024, anticipation builds for another remarkable recognition of outstanding contributions. Categories will cover a range of initiatives including the Diversity Initiative, ESG Initiative, Pro Bono Project, and Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year.

The upcoming Latin Lawyer Annual Awards ceremony is more than just an event; it symbolizes a collective commitment to advancing pro bono work, ensuring civic spaces remain vibrant and legally compliant, and championing the cause of those in need throughout the Latin American region.
