The Charleston Police Department has confirmed that the driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene prior to the arrival of emergency services.

The pedestrian was attempting to cross Paul Cantrell Boulevard when they were struck by the vehicle. Following the collision, the victim was quickly transported to a local hospital, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have stated that the vehicle and driver responsible for the hit-and-run have not yet been located. In response to this fatal incident, the Charleston Police Department is appealing to the public for information that could aid in the investigation. Those with relevant details are encouraged to contact the department’s Traffic Unit at 843-965-4084 or to submit an anonymous tip online.

The road where the collision took place was closed for approximately four hours while police conducted their investigations, reopening at 12:45 a.m. on July 12. This incident is notably the sixth traffic-related fatality investigated by Charleston police in 2023. The types of traffic incidents recorded this year include a multi-vehicle collision, three auto-pedestrian collisions, and two single-vehicle collisions.

It underscores the importance of driver awareness and adherence to traffic laws. In previous years, Charleston has seen similar incidents prompting campaigns for safer streets and increased vigilance among drivers.

Law enforcement agencies continue to emphasize the need for cooperation from the public in such cases, as tips and information can prove crucial in apprehending individuals who flee after causing injury or death. The Charleston Police Department is committed to ensuring that justice is served for victims of traffic-related incidents and their families.
