News Summary

Horry Georgetown Technical College has forged a new transfer agreement with the College of Charleston, allowing students to easily transition from an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration to a Bachelor of Professional Studies. Set to begin in February 2025, this collaboration aims to enhance educational pathways by ensuring seamless credit transfers. With rising enrollment figures and a focus on expanding technical programs, HGTC is dedicated to meeting workforce needs while easing the financial burden on students. The agreement represents a significant advancement in higher education accessibility within South Carolina.

Conway, SC – Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) has established a new transfer agreement with the College of Charleston, facilitating a more streamlined transition for students aiming to further their education. Under this agreement, students who successfully complete the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Business Administration at HGTC will have the opportunity to transfer to the College of Charleston to pursue a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree.

The partnership is set to commence on February 3, 2025, and is poised to expand educational prospects for students seeking to advance their academic journey. The transfer agreement is designed to ensure that courses taken at HGTC will be accepted without complications at the College of Charleston, provided they are taught by qualified faculty. This initiative reflects a growing commitment to improve student pathways and outcomes in higher education.

Enrollment figures indicate a positive trend within South Carolina’s technical colleges, with a 6 percent increase recorded this year. For the past three years, there has been consistent growth, resulting in approximately 130,000 students being served across the state’s technical colleges. Factors contributing to this increase include the SC WINS program, which helps reduce tuition costs for eligible students, enhancing the appeal of technical college education.

Understanding the Benefits of the Transfer Agreement

The collaboration between HGTC and the College of Charleston is part of a broader effort to facilitate smooth credit transfers and streamline educational pathways. Full block agreements like the one established with Converse University allow students to transfer all general education courses as a block, making it easier for them to graduate in two or three years. This initiative is essential for students aiming to save time and reduce educational expenses.

Students pursuing a technical college education can save as much as $25,000 compared to enrolling directly in a four-year institution. This aspect is particularly significant in South Carolina, which ranks fifth in the nation for student debt, highlighting the need for cost-effective higher education options.

Addressing Workforce Needs and Programs Offered

Technical colleges such as HGTC are responding to workforce demands by expanding their program offerings. This includes courses in Information Technology, wastewater management, nursing, and clinical assistant patient programs. HGTC is targeting a notable growth in its nursing program, setting an ambitious goal of enrolling 600 nursing students by 2030.

To support this expansion, HGTC is planning the construction of a new nursing and health science building, along with a marine technology facility on its Georgetown campus. Current enrollment at HGTC stands at over 7,900 students, marking record numbers for the institution this year.

The Future of Higher Education in South Carolina

As part of the ongoing effort to enhance educational pathways and maintain relevance in the job market, collaborations between technical colleges and four-year institutions are becoming increasingly common. The focus is on creating smoother transitions for students while aligning educational offerings with workforce needs. This trend ensures that graduates possess the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in a competitive job environment.

The newly established transfer agreement between HGTC and the College of Charleston not only supports students but also signifies an important step forward in higher education collaboration within South Carolina. By promoting efficient pathways from two-year to four-year degrees, this initiative highlights the commitment to educational accessibility and workforce development in the region.
