From tree planting to educational workshops, there’s something for everyone to participate in this Earth Month.

Celebrating Earth Month: Charleston and Las Vegas Get Involved

April is a special month for environmentally conscious folks, as it marks Earth Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about our planet and celebrating the beauty it holds. This year, both Charleston and Las Vegas are bustling with exciting events aimed at sparking community interest in sustainability and environmental preservation. With lots of activities lined up, there’s something for everyone!

Charleston’s Collective Effort for the Earth

In Charleston, the Lowcountry Land Trust, alongside 50 other local organizations, is gearing up to host various events throughout the month. This year is particularly significant, as it marks 55 years since the modern environmental movement kicked off during the first Earth Day celebration in 1970. Over the decades, the first Earth Day had a profound effect, leading to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and pivotal legal frameworks like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.

In Charleston, locals can get hands-on with volunteer opportunities and immerse themselves in nature activities. Community events include workshops, seminars, and festivals designed to educate and inspire. Interested volunteers can join in on initiatives such as creating wire reefs to aid oyster reef restoration or take a tour of Charleston County’s Bees Ferry Composting Facility. These activities not only educate participants about sustainability but also foster a strong sense of community as locals come together for the greater good.

Las Vegas’ Hustle and Bustle for Sustainability

North Las Vegas is hosting a tree giveaway on April 12, where 100 free trees will be distributed at Prentiss Walker Park. Not only will residents get their hands on some greenery, but they will also receive planting assistance. Volunteering opportunities are also available, including a cleanup event scheduled for Pittman Wash Trail on April 26. It’s a fantastic chance for people to roll up their sleeves and positively impact their local environment.

Henderson is not lagging behind either! They are hosting an Earth Day Recycled 5K on April 5, which will also be combined with a trail cleanup at Cornerstone Park. It’s a fun way to get active while doing something good for the planet!

Community Connections and Educational Opportunities

Green Our Planet will light up Downtown Summerlin, promoting local produce and sustainability. Cleanup events are also set for Mountain’s Edge Regional Park and Springs Preserve on April 19, creating many opportunities for community involvement.

On a more educational note, Springs Preserve will celebrate Earth Day on April 19 with various engaging activities, access to museums, and immersive garden tours. Plus, Henderson will host another tree giveaway on April 26 at Wells Park, where residents can learn about tree care and enjoy hands-on learning experiences about their new leafy friends.

Celebrating Culture and Nature

4th Annual Powwow for the Planet will showcase cultural preservation and environmental justice for Native youth, linking tradition and sustainability in a powerful way. Love Lake Mead Days, which is a multi-day volunteer extravaganza, will take place from April 19 to 26 at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, providing more opportunities for community engagement. Earth Night Star Party at Red Rock Canyon, emphasizing dark skies conservation and stargazing education. For nature enthusiasts, the upcoming BioBlast event during the Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival will include fun activities to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day.
