In response to the evacuation order, some have sought legal advice, with two Charleston-area law firms exploring options to challenge the city’s decision or the building management’s role in the situation.

The structural report also highlighted troubling findings, indicating that more than 80% of the connection points between the tower’s support columns and the concrete slabs had not been tested. This raises further concerns about public safety not just for Dockside residents, but also for neighboring properties. Indeed, residents living in adjacent townhomes have also been required to evacuate as a precautionary measure.

Residents have expressed growing frustrations regarding the lack of communication from local officials about the plans for repairs of the building and the overall timeline for restoring normalcy to their lives. There have been pleas for transparency regarding any safety threats to neighboring structures, yet state officials have not provided satisfactory answers to address these concerns.

A townhome resident, Brenda LaMont, publicly questioned the rationale behind the evacuation decision, especially considering her unit’s proximity to the tower. She noted that the engineering reports did not directly implicate her home as being at risk. Despite these claims, local officials maintain the necessity of further testing and analysis is important before residents can return safely.

As residents grapple with the immediate consequences of the evacuation, including financial burdens from maintaining their mortgages while displaced, the uncertainty surrounding the future of Dockside Condominiums looms larger. Ongoing discussions and evaluations concerning the structural safety of the building remain key to determining the next steps for both those evacuated and the community as a whole.
