An area in Charleston succumbing to flooding, showcasing the rising water levels impacting roads and homes.
Charleston, SC is experiencing rising coastal flooding incidents attributed to escalating sea levels and local geography. Recent advisories warn citizens of imminent flooding risks, which have significantly increased over the last decade, necessitating better preparation and community awareness.
Charleston, SC, is grappling with escalating incidents of coastal flooding, a troubling trend linked to rising sea levels and the city’s unique geography featuring marshes, creeks, and coastal waters. A recent coastal flooding advisory was issued for parts of Charleston County after moderate flooding impacted the area on the evening prior.
Blair Halloway, the Lead Forecaster for the National Weather Service in Charleston, indicated that flooding events are expected to grow more frequent due to various natural factors. Tidal flooding is influenced by gravitational effects from celestial bodies like the moon and sun, combined with wind patterns that can exacerbate the situation.
Over the last ten years, the frequency of coastal flooding has significantly increased. Recent data shows that minor flood events have surged by at least three times compared to the previous decade. A study conducted by Lending Tree has highlighted South Carolina ranking third out of 41 coastal states in terms of increased coastal flood events, revealing a staggering 580.3% rise in flooding occurrences.
The National Weather Service has provided historical data that confirms an upward trend in flood events since 2015. The reports indicate a clear increase in minor, moderate, and major flood events, with a graphical representation illustrating this growth. Notably, there have been a total of 52 recorded instances of tides exceeding eight feet, with 38 (73%) of these incidents occurring since 2015.
Coastal flooding poses significant risks to homeowners, often leading to costly damages that require the replacement of rotted materials and mold prevention measures. Rob Bhatt, an Insurance Analyst for Lending Tree, emphasized the vital importance of having flood insurance and implementing protective measures for homes, which may include elevating HVAC systems and installing flood vents.
Earlier this week, a Coastal Flood Warning was in effect, forecasting 1-2 feet of flooding along shorelines and tidal waterways, rendering certain roads impassable. A Coastal Flood Advisory was also issued for coastal Colleton and Charleston counties, with predictions of half a foot of above-ground flooding.
Forecasts projected saltwater inundation could impact roads one to two hours before and after the high tide scheduled at 8:33 PM for Charleston Harbor. Residents were advised to stay alert for potential road closures and avoid driving through any flooded areas for safety concerns. Specifically, the Highway 61 ramp from US 17 SB in West Ashley was closed due to flooding at approximately 7:30 AM, along with other affected roads such as Lockwood Drive, Fishburne Street, and Hagood Avenue.
Authorities stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures, advising drivers to never bypass barricades surrounding flooded roadways. The increase in coastal flooding not only raises the urgency for protective measures but also highlights the need for communities to remain vigilant in the face of changing environmental conditions.
As Charleston faces these challenges, understanding the underlying causes and risks of coastal flooding becomes critical for residents and local authorities. Preparedness is essential, as the trend of increasing flooding events will undoubtedly continue to pose threats to the community and its infrastructure.
