Winter Storm Wreaks Havoc in Charleston, S.C.
What’s happening, Charleston? Winter has come crashing down on the Lowcountry, leaving us with a messy blanket of ice and snow and sending temperatures plunging below freezing overnight. While some folks enjoy the rare sight of snowflakes in this area, others are feeling the pinch of a winter storm that has tied up our daily routines.
Weather Update
For anyone who ventured outside, you probably noticed the roads still covered in ice and snow, making driving a challenge. These hazardous conditions prompted local officials to take action to ensure residents’ safety, resulting in widespread closures and cancellations across the region.
City and County Closures
In the bustling Town of Mount Pleasant, all facilities have closed their doors through Friday. Staff members are working remotely, meaning recreational activities are off the table for Thursday and Friday. And if you were hoping to set out the trash, you’ll need to wait until Monday as collection has been suspended.
Meanwhile, the City of Hanahan plans to open its city offices at 1 p.m. on Friday, although garbage service for the day has been canceled. You might want to hold onto that trash a bit longer!
Parks and Recreation
If you had plans to visit any of the Charleston County Parks, think again; all parks and facilities are shuttered on Friday. The City of Goose Creek is opening offices at 11 a.m. on Friday, and recreational fun will resume at noon. As for trash pickup, Wednesday and Thursday collections are rolled into Friday, while any missed pickups will happen on Saturday.
Events Canceled
For those training hard for the Charleston Half Marathon, we bring some unfortunate news—the event scheduled for Saturday has been canceled due to safety concerns surrounding the icy conditions. The SC Stingrays hockey game, however, has been rescheduled to a 3:05 p.m. start on Friday instead of the original evening time.
What About Schools?
In other local news, the Dorchester School District Two has rescheduled its Winter Recruitment Fair to February 8th, giving potential hires some extra time to prepare.
Government Offices
On the government front, Georgetown County has closed all its offices through Friday and will resume operations on Monday. The City of Charleston has also decided to shut all offices on Friday, with trash routes suspended until Monday. The roads are expected to be clear by midday to mid-afternoon, so we might see some relief soon!
Health and Safety
For health services, Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s freestanding emergency departments will remain open, but it’s important to note that partner physician clinics and labs are closed, though some virtual visits are still available. If you’re in need of infusion services, those will kick off at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Add on the Closures
Other notable closures include:
- Dorchester County Parks: All parks closed Friday.
- Charleston County Libraries: All libraries are unfortunately locked up Friday, with book drops closed too.
- Medical University of South Carolina: The campus and Wellness Center will remain closed, but remote learning continues.
- Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum: Closed through Friday.
As we navigate these frosty days, we encourage everyone to stay safe, stay warm, and prepare for a bit of a delayed return to normalcy. With so many operational changes happening, remember to check with your local officials for updates!
