Charleston, S.C. – Hundreds of local residents gathered in downtown Charleston on Saturday to participate in the People’s Rally Against Fascism, an event organized by the Lowcountry Solidarity Network. The rally, held at Brittlebank Park, aimed to address concerns regarding the influence of billionaires in politics and what participants describe as “fascist government overreach.”

The event served as a platform for various leftist organizations in the region, uniting a coalition that includes the Charleston Alliance for Fair Employment (CAFE), Charleston Climate Coalition (CCL), Charleston Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Free Palestine Charleston, South Carolina Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and several other local activist groups. Collectively, these organizations focused on promoting fair employment, environmental justice, and social equity.

Participants at the rally engaged in a range of activities, including waving flags and signs while chanting messages highlighting their concerns. A popular chant was “the rent is too damn high,” led by representatives from the Tri-County Tenant Union. Alongside lively expressions of solidarity, attendees listened to speakers who highlighted critical issues afflicting marginalized communities.

Max Sorgenfrey, a member of the Charleston DSA, outlined the various ways government actions reportedly suppress civil liberties and impact vulnerable populations. He drew attention to specific issues such as attacks on immigrant rights, repression of free speech, unfair rent prices, wage stagnation, and the misallocation of taxpayer money toward military endeavors rather than public welfare. Sorgenfrey also emphasized the negative outcomes of environmental degradation from unchecked development projects and the detrimental effects of public school budget cuts.

The rally represented the culmination of a month-long series of collective activities organized by the Lowcountry Solidarity Network. Throughout this period, various events and outreach efforts were undertaken to consolidate community voices against the perceived threats posed by billionaire influence and authoritarian governance.

A representative from Free Palestine Charleston underscored the necessity of supporting the Elbit Out of SC campaign, reinforcing connections between local and global struggles for justice. Sorgenfrey further noted the relationship between the concentrating wealth of billionaires and the broader implications for social battles across different sectors of society. The rally’s diverse attendance reflected a growing concern regarding rising inequality and the erosion of democratic values.

Although a visible police presence was noted at the event, it was described as smaller compared to previous rallies of similar nature. The Charleston Police Department did not provide comments regarding their approach or presence at the rally, leading to questions regarding the city’s response to such demonstrations.

The People’s Rally Against Fascism highlights ongoing local dialogues around social justice, economic equity, and the integrity of democratic institutions. As groups continue to mobilize in response to the political landscape, similar rallies and actions may arise to reinforce community solidarity and advocate for systemic change.
