Charleston Navy Yard Initiates Live-Work Units in Multi-Phase Redevelopment Plan

CHARLESTON, S.C – An ambitious redevelopment plan kicks off as Charleston’s Navy Yard proudly inaugurates the new live-work units crafted within a historic structure. This evolved space opens to a fresh chapter in providing a residence for workforce families and promoting local industry growth.

Revitalizing The Storehouse Nine

The transformation centers around the Storehouse Nine, a storied building built in 1918 that has newly found its role as a domicile for 78 tenants. These tenants will help fuel the Lowcountry’s expanding workforce and contribute to the local economy. The overarching aim is to cultivate innovation while enduringly preserving the site’s architectural elegance and naval heritage. Remodeling has created several chic studio and one-bedroom apartments within the storehouse, with rates spanning from $1600 up to $2000.

Transforming the Charleston Navy Yard

Renewal of the Storehouse Nine represents just one facet of the extensive multi-phase project designed to rejuvenate and reshape an expansive 85 acres of the Navy Yard into a buzzing mixed-used neighborhood. Upon culmination, the plans envision 3.2 million square feet of diverse spaces comprising offices, retail outlets, entertainment hubs, residences, and greenspaces.

Embracing Flexible Work-Lifestyle Balance

Founder and President of Weaver Capital Partners, Jay Weaver, celebrated this stride toward the future. “Today’s workforce is more flexible and more mobile than ever before,” said Weaver. “We wanted to create a living experience that reflects that trend and serves a broad range of lifestyles and working arrangements.”

The bright hope is that the transformed Storehouse Nine can versatilely adapt to different inhabitants, such as artists and business owners, as well as those desiring a homely office ambiance. By providing an appealing and practical space, the idea is to promote the growth and stability of a diverse range of professions and lifestyles in the area.

Economic Implications

This initiative not only preserves a piece of Charleston history in a practical and modern way but also plays a crucial role in supporting local economic growth. By offering affordable residences that cater to different needs, it contributes to the stability and continuity of workforce and trade in the region. More importantly, it serves as a model for other regions eyeing economic expansion through sustainable redevelopment programs.

The Road Ahead

The successful unveiling of live-work units at the Storehouse Nine marks a promising start to the multi-phase redevelopment plan in the Charleston Navy Yard. It embodies a harmonious vision of preserving past architectural glory while catering to contemporary societal needs. The subsequent phases are anticipated to follow suit, further amplifying the site’s potential as a flourishing mixed-use neighborhood.
