News Summary

Charleston County is facing significant traffic incidents resulting in deaths and road closures. Investigations are ongoing as authorities urge the community to stay vigilant on the roads.

Charleston County Reports Multiple Traffic Incidents Resulting in Deaths and Road Closures

Charleston County is currently grappling with significant traffic incidents that have left one person dead and resulted in road closures. A section of Northbound Savannah Highway is shut down near Davison Road due to an ongoing investigation. Motorists are being urged to seek alternate routes, although the nature of the incident and the expected duration of the closure remain unclear.

One of the tragic events occurred earlier today when a Beaufort man, identified as 54-year-old Clarence Delaney Jr., lost his life following a crash that stemmed from a police pursuit. This incident unfolded around 9:48 a.m. on Cross Country Road after officers attempted to stop Delaney for driving a stolen vehicle. The chase began at approximately 9:45 a.m. when he fled from the attempted traffic stop, subsequently increasing his speed down Cross Country Road towards Ashley Phosphate Road. The police later found Delaney’s crashed vehicle in the 7200 block of Cross Country Road, where he suffered fatal blunt force injuries, according to the Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal.

In addition to the fatal incident involving Delaney, another serious crash occurred at about 4:55 p.m. in Charleston County. This involved a U-Haul truck fleeing law enforcement, leading to a multi-vehicle collision that resulted in one fatality and seven people hospitalized. The U-Haul was purportedly being pursued by North Charleston Police for reasons that remain undisclosed. During the incident, the truck drove on the wrong side of the road, impacting two pedestrians before crashing into a Mercedes-Benz sedan. This collision led to a chain-reaction involving a motorcycle and a Chevrolet Tahoe.

One motorcycle rider was confirmed dead at the scene, though the identity of this individual has not yet been released by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office. The incident also resulted in numerous injuries, affecting passengers within the U-Haul, the motorcyclists, and the pedestrians. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the occupants of the Chevrolet Tahoe. Currently, there have been no arrests made in connection with the U-Haul truck incident, which is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

As of mid-April 2025, the state of South Carolina has recorded 234 traffic fatalities this year, with Charleston County witnessing 15 of these deaths. In comparison, the year 2024 saw a total of 50 traffic-related deaths in the same county, highlighting a concerning trend in road safety.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is actively involved in the investigation of the first traffic incident, while the South Carolina Highway Patrol is handling the U-Haul collision case, emphasizing the need for continued focus on traffic law enforcement and public safety.

With the ongoing investigations and numerous injuries reported, the community is urged to remain vigilant on the roads and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
