CHARLESTON, S.C. — A shuttered convenience store in the West Ashley area of Charleston, S.C., is getting a second life as a wine bar on one side and a charcuterie counter on the other.

Deanna’s Wine Bar and Bert’s Pig Shop will fill the old 7-Eleven at 521 Wappoo Road. Owners Bert Sheffield and Douglas Hickerson are building the split concept, and Sheffield is aiming to open the doors by the end of 2026.

The wine side takes its name from Hickerson’s mother. Its list is planned around bottles from small producers in Europe and the United States, sold at prices meant to stay affordable.

The pig shop will cure and slice its own meats on site, with whole hogs supplied by Peculiar Pig, a fifth-generation family farm in Dorchester County. The new shop will be a wholesale buyer for that farm.

Because the storefront sits in a converted corner store rather than a busy shopping strip, the owners will need to make sure neighbors on the surrounding blocks know it is there when it opens.
